When Does Seaweed Season End In Cancun?

Sargassum is a harmless brown seaweed. Despite its benign nature, it’s ugly, smelly, and annoying.

It chokes off the Cancun coast from April until October. The period from August until autumn is the worst of it. Scientists, unfortunately, say that the phenomenon will only get worse as global temperatures rise.

The best time to visit is during the winter. Not only does the fractionally cooler water prevent the seaweed from blooming, but it’s also possible to avoid the cold temperatures throughout northern climes.

The only issue is that everyone has the same idea. Avoiding the seaweed doesn’t mean that you will avoid the crowds. Still, Cancun has so much to offer that many folks go anyway.

You can take a luxury cruise and snorkel in some of the clearest water in the world. Swimming with whale sharks is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thrill too. Or, if you prefer, go inland and combine an invigorating hike with a breathtaking zipline ride.

Get in touch with the past, too, with a day excursion to Chichen Itza. If shows are your thing, then catch Cirque de Soleil at the Vidanta Riviera Maya resort. Cancun is more than just the beaches and clear water!
